Gurus preview The Very Big Fatback

The Going Out Gurus have a few kind word for The Very Big Fatback; check out this week’s Nightlife Agenda

Friday, July 16

Once a year or so, the guys behind the insanely popular monthly Fatback dance party pack up their awesome funk, soul and R&B records, call a few bands and throw a much bigger event at the 9:30 Club. (They call this “The Very Big Fatback.”) It’s going down tonight with assists from the honey-voiced George Smallwood, who put out some amazing funk and disco releases back in the ’70s and is now being rediscovered by hometown soul aficionados, and the Art of Junk, a go-go band features some of the original members of the trailblazing Junkyard Band. (Seriously, you’ve rocked out to “Sardines” more than once in your life, right?) In between live acts, the Fatback boys spin the usual mix of greasy, gritty dance tunes. The cover’s a mere $10.

Click here for details on The Very Big Fatback. You can also RSVP on Facebook and check out this month’s promo mix, Fatback Mix Vol. 23.

Junk Yard Band —> Art of Junk

For those unfamiliar, Art of Junk is a modern incarnation of the bombastic 1980’s go-go powerhouse known as the Junk Yard Band. Wiki describes the band’s formation:

The band was formed in 1980 by children, ranging in age from 8 to 13, living in the Barry Farm government housing project in Washington, D.C.. They were inspired to play after witnessing the performances of local go-go bands in their neighborhood. Not having resources to purchase traditional instruments, the children instead scoured their neighborhood in search of objects that could emulate the sound of real instruments: hubcaps, plastic buckets, crates, cans, and discarded pots and pans. After a few informal performances in Barry Farm, the group was dubbed the “Junk Yard Band” by locals.

Later signed to Def Jam Recordings the group released their famous hit singles The Word/ Sardines in 1986 and went on to play everywhere from the Capitol Center to the junkyard:

Now in their current form the Art of Junk, comprised of original Junk Yard members, is exploring new territory while still playing the classics. Here’s a cover of MIA’s paper planes from a recent 9:30 show:

DCist interviews PPU’s Andrew Morgan

Yesterday, DCist posted an interview with Andrew Morgan of DC boogie/funk/soul label Peoples Potential Unlimited (PPU). It’s a good read.

You might also hit the Peoples Potential Unlimited site. Got some great music up there and George Smallwood, who’ll be joining us at The Very Big Fatback, is a PPU artist. Check ‘em out.
