Fatback Mix Vol. 37: Soul-Covered Rock- The LadyJams

So the plan for this month’s mix was to compile a bunch of soul covers of rock songs. After all, they are some of our favorite tunes to play and always get lots of love from Fatback dancers. But as it was coming together the ladies just started to dominate and it became clear that they needed this mix to themselves. I’m talkin’ about some powerhouses, y’all. Aretha and her sister Erma, Patti Labelle, Tina Turner, Diana & The Supremes, Nina Simone… you see where I’m going right?

A couple of highlights notes (they’re all highlights) on this one… Merry Clayton, whose powerful background vocals illuminated the Rolling Stones “Gimme Shelter”, shines here in delivering her own rendition of the song. The lone contemporary recording is Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings’ cool burning “Just Dropped In”. Labelle’s shimmering harmonies carry a surprising take on the The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again”. Syreeta takes it home with a brilliant version of The Beatles’ “She’s Leaving Home”, featuring her former husband Stevie Wonder on the talk box and synthesizer.
