Two words: Instant Classic
Unlike many other selections on the list, Lean on Me is not a Fatback staple. But it earned such a high spot for a couple reasons.
One being that back in November of 2010, Sean P went out on a limb and dropped this 70bpm slow jam at the height of the evening. The result was one of the most sublime sing-alongs we’ve had to date. Hands, lighters, cell phones in the air - we all knew the words and we were all belting them out in unison. We all had somebody to lean on that night.
The other is our straight up love for Bill Withers. If Fatback had 5 basic food groups, Withers would certainly be one of them (Bacon being the other 4). Maybe he didn’t have the voice of Marvin or Mayfield, but the man is one of the most unbelievable songwriters. Grandma’s Hands, Ain’t No Sunshine, Lovely Day, Use Me, Harlem. Withers was a machine.
Unfortunately, his tracks are better suited for a smokey bar than a crowded club…or so we thought.
Thanks to Mr. Withers, Sean P, and everybody who fills the dance floor and celebrates great music with us.
